The Autoput – the old Way to Greece

The road from Germany or Austria over Serbia to Greece is opened again 2002 . The Autoput or the Balkanroute over Slovenien and Croatia (or alternatively Hungary), Serbia and Macedonia is in a better condition than 1990 and improves daily, because the neighboring countries are dependent on foreign exchange. Many evaluated travel reports showed that in relation the Ferry-Boats from Italy the Autoput is a serious alternative.

Travelling the road with more than one person may be cheaper than the ferries from Italy to Greece. It takes nearly the same time as the trip with the ferries over Italy. The General German Automobile Association indicates a travel time of 15,40 hours for the route Villach – Thessaloniki. In the winter the ferry in any case is to be preferred, since there is danger that the roads may be closed by snow.

Information from the OEAMTC:

since the abolition of the visa obligation for Serbia and Montenegro Austrian citizens need for the transit only a valid passport. For the travel by Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia as well as Bosnia and Herzegowina the identity card or the passort is sufficient.

Ensure for the transit by Serbia that "SCG" is not crossed out in the Green insurance card. Otherwise still another assurance must be bought. In Slovenia all year round during the day the light obligation applies. Duty fees: for the route Slovenia (Ljubljana) - Croatia - Serbia - Macedonia - Greece a passenger car up to 3.5 t: approx. EUR 44,00.

You can prepare the journey with the car with the route planner of Michelin (ViaMichelin) or get a prepared route with overnight accomodations from your Automobile Association.

By the way the bridge from Rio to Antirio over the sea by Patras is open since 2004. It is an impressive building in the air over the sea, which can be compared with the golden gate bridge. Looks genuinly mad: The bridge sections hang free several hundred meters in the air and are hold only by steel cables.
